Calvin’s Injury

Fans at Detroit Lions practice this morning were surprised to see All-Pro WR and Madden 13 Cover Athlete, Calvin Johnson, sitting out of practice with his left index finger taped up. A crowd of about 500 fans caught an up close and personal look at the 2012 Detroit Lions at their training facility in Allen Park this morning. Calvin’s finger has been bothering him since last week, but there wasn’t much concern after he played in the team’s first preseason game Friday night against the Cleveland Browns.  To see him sit out today came as a shock to some fans, and also brought along some understandable concern and questions. Head Coach Jim Schwartz had this to say about “Megatron”:

“He wasn’t shut down because of his finger,” Schwartz said. “Just general camp kind of legs and soreness. He needed a day here, too. Calvin doesn’t have a regulator, either.” (more…)

{Q1}So the LIONS draw New Orleans as their Wild Card match up. Convince DMR how they can POSSIBLY beat the odds and come out victorious…

The Lions have put a good body of work in the regular season. Now they parallel to 11 other teams in the NFL. The fact that the Lions are giving the Saint 11 points is ridiculous. I think it is the lack of fundamental shown in Green Bay last week. The Lions are who they are. Dropped balls, penalties, crazy to think all that will just evaporate for the playoffs. They have to play better, duh! Now is not the time to teach or try to “get better”. Its time to win.

On to the keys to the Lions winning.

Stafford must stay in tune. Let the game plan play out. Allow Scott Linehan to work the adjustments and execute, execute, execute.

Pressure to reroute the Brees. The St. Louis Ram sacked 6 times and the Rams won. The defensive line is healthy and legal to play. Nick Fairley was having his way with the Saint interior line before going to the sideline with an injury in he previous meeting. Ndamukong Suh was suspended and key reserve Lawrence Jackson was injured. The defensive gave up big plays for scores and who ever is rushing he passer (DB’s LB’s also) need to get there.

Gunther Cunningham vs. Sean Peyton. Cunningham said that he wanted another shot at the Saints with a healthy defense. Well the motto for this Lions season here at DMR has been no excuses no explanations. In addition to not having Fairley for he whole game missing Suh and Jackson, the Lions were without Louis Delams and Chris Houston. All the pieces are present. Play chess.

The Detroit Lions defensive line is going to fight over sacks and tackles. Some think good teams are anchored by a good offensive line. I personally believe good NFL teams live and die by there defensive line.

Ndamukong Suh had a great rookie season. He did it with a damaged shoulder. We do expect him to get better year after year. Keep in mind how many snaps Suh played this past season. According to bleacherreport.com Suh played 997 snaps out of 1,105 total defensive snaps in 2010. Playing along side Corey Williams and them rotating with Sammie Hill made he Lions interior Defensive Line very strong and not easy to run on. Now they add another force in the middle, Nick Fairley which give them a nice 4 man rotation. (more…)

Since Charles Rogers went out two years in a row with shoulder injuries it seems like the Lions have had more and more of them. I won’t go back into the Matt Millen era.

In 2009 Matthew Stafford hurt his shoulder on a game winning drive verse the Cleveland Browns. This season he went down the first game of the season in Chicago against the Bears and down again in week 9 against the New York Jets. Both were different shoulder injuries.

The Lions also lost Alphonso Smith for the season during week 13 verse the Bears due to a separated shoulder. Drew Stanton Hurt his shoulder which may have forced Shaun Hill back into the lineup for the final two games.

Now, surprisingly Ndamukong Suh is going to have off season surgery on one of his shoulders. Which shoulder was not specified but Suh did have this to say. “My thinking (on surgery) was just to make sure I was 100-percent healthy going into the off-season program and to be ready for March and so forth.” Unfortunately this will keep Suh out of the Pro Bowl.

Let’s get rid of these shoulder injuries and hopefully Matthew Stafford is the 2011 comeback player of the year.

Coach Schwartz had another chance to stand up for one of  his players, and again he failed to do so. Week one the catch, that would have won the game and broke a record setting road losing streak, and he did nothing. In the following weeks it been the same old tired press conference, with vague answer, and soft ass politically correct statements. Coach Schwartz the Detroit Lions Fans want to see some emotion out of you in front of the camera. We want to see you put people in their place, reporters, players, referees, and the NFL. There noway that the NFL should’ve fined Ndamukong Suh for pushing a player to the ground, they are playing football right. Why does every other head coach in the NFL speak up and take up for their players when either they have done something wrong or they are being singled out by the NFL. This is a hard nose city and we don’t hold back we speak our minds and need you to do the same before its to late.

The jerseys are sold out and on back order for good reason. The Stats say it all, 22 Solo Tackles 6.5 Sacks a fumble recovery for a TD and an INT that Ndamukong Suh says “I should follow my block “.

A big DMR shot out to all the people that had something to say when Suh came to the Derick Williams charity softball game and couldn’t sign every autograph. A second DMR shot out to all the people that had something to say during the brief hold out of the 2nd over all pick in the 2010 draft who probably should have got more money. Yeah, the bottle top twisting of Jake Delhomme was playing a little rough, but I like the way it has carried over to the regular season. They have been double teaming this guy since the very first pre-season game and now we know why. Compare it to Gerald McCoy 10 Solo Tackles 0 Sacks & 1 fumble recovery. Not to toot my own horn, but my mind was made up when Suh bench press 32 reps and McCoy only had 23 reps at the combine. You can pen this guy Suh in for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He could even make a statement for Defensive MVP if he repeats this in the second half of the season.

On top of his play on the field, Suh is well spoken off the field and is backing up every word said from the locker-room. He is already involved in the community and you can find him catching a Pistons game with his teammates.
