Having looked at the individual match-ups of the season, it’s hard not to think the schedule looks easier this year than previous years. That’s par for the course in the NFL, however, and it’s about time we are matched with another division that isn’t stacked, (maybe even two). The key to this season will unquestionably be the games against the NFC North, along with winning the games that should be won. I remember growing up the Lions would win the games they should have lost and would lose the games they should win. They can’t afford for that to happen this season. Here’s a look at my season prediction in terms of simple win/loss:

1 – St. Louis – Win
2 – @ San Francisco – Win
3 – @ Tennessee – Win
4 – Minnesota – Win
6 – @ Philadelphia – Loss
7 – @ Chicago – Loss
8 – Seattle – Win
9 – @ Jacksonville – Win
10 – @ Minnesota – Win
11 – Green Bay – Loss
12 – Houston – Win
13 – Indianapolis – Win
14 – @ Green Bay – Win
15 – @ Arizona – Win
16 – Atlanta – Loss
17 – Chicago – Win

Looking over the schedule it’s hard not to get excited. Maybe it’s because for the first time in a long time, the Lions can realistically beat anybody. I’m sure my opinion will change once the preseason gets rolling and the real action starts, but looking from the outset of training camp, and I think 12-4 is very realistic.

I stated that this game would be a great test for the Lions, not because it was a road game or because it was against a divisional opponent. More because the Vikings have an offense that puts more pressure on the defense to get stops and they have a good defensive line that can put pressure on the QB. I’m proud to say that this game did truly prove that the Lions are not the same old Lions. I was impressed with how the Lions held RB Adrian Peterson to 78 yards. We also did a good job of pressuring QB Donovan McNabb. Offensively I was impressed with the rookie WR Titus Young who once again made great key catches to help us win. Lastly I was impressed with QB Matt Stafford, who stayed so calm and led his team back with the great help of WR Calvin Johnson. Heading into next week against the Dallas Cowboys we need to be concerned with LB Demarcus Ware who has been good this season at getting to the Quarterback. Against the Vikings, Lions allowed QB Matthew Stafford to get hit 9 times, that can’t continue to happen. Lion’s secondary coverage needs to be ready for WR Miles Austin (if he plays) , WR Dez Bryant and TE Jason Witten who have great hands and speed. The key for the Lions will be to put pressure on the Cowboy’s inconsistent offensive line and force QB Tony Romo to make bad decisions.

The Lions are working out veteran WR Troy Williamson. Williamson was selected 7thin over all in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. That was the same draft the Lions selected Mike Williams 10th over all.

The Lions need to improve the depth at WR, so it shouldn’t come to a surprise that they worked out the speedy Williamson. This is the second time the Lions have worked out Williamson. This is not alarming to me because as many Wide Outs the Lions have taken in the first round, we still need depth at this position. I was really hoping that Derrick Williams would step up and take the 3rd spot on the depth chart but it seems that he is just not being trusted in the offense. I don’t know if it’s something he isn’t showing in practice or what.

With that said Lions fans, be prepared for the Lions to select a WR in the 2011 Draft if they are unable to get a guy in free agency.

We will take a look around the NFL to see what coaches are in the hot-seat.

Mike Singletary

San Francisco 49ers Record 4-7

This team was expected to easily win the NFC West. Singletary has been head coach for a full 2 years now. He may have a little time to get things going but they should not be struggling in this weak division. His seat is heating up. Singletary still has a shot at winning the division and still making the playoffs but it may be with a losing record or at best .500. (more…)
