Wow, I think the Tigers made the biggest splash yet in this year’s free agency pool. By securing Prince Fielder Tuesday (9-year/214 million dollar deal), the Tigers have taken a BOLD step toward being considered a serious contenders in the AL. Teaming Prince Fielder with Miguel Cabrera presents an imposing lineup even to baseball’s most potent pitching staffs. Speaking of pitching, don’t forget the impact that Doug Fister and Rick Porcello had in MEANINGFUL playoff games. Couple that with Justin Verlander coming off the best year of his career and the prospect of resigning free agent pitcher Edwin Jackson. I’ll admit, I thought this team was doomed after the loss of DH Victor Martinez. But wowsers, I think this addition surprised even the most ardent Tigers Fan. Don’t look now but the Tigers looked poised, with bonafide superstars on BOTH sides of the ball. When was the last time you could say that???

Shout out to Detroit Tigers owner Mike Ilitch for having the gumption to pull the trigger on the BIGGEST signing in Detroit sports history!! Ilitch first met Fielder as a youth when his father played for the Tigers (1990-96).  Even then the two were said to have bonded, and Ilitch voweled to bring young Prince HOME if ever afforded the opportunity. Agent Scott Boras has a history of dealing DIRECTLY with Ilitch . Sending us the likes of Pudge Rodriguez, Maggio Ordonez, and Johnny Damon. So it seemed like a no-brainer when he came calling about Fielder. I’m sure everyone around here remembers the tale of a young Prince Fielder swinging for the fences at old Tigers Stadium…its just good to see “the old man” swing for the fences by returning Prince to his home throne.

{Q1}So the LIONS draw New Orleans as their Wild Card match up. Convince DMR how they can POSSIBLY beat the odds and come out victorious…

First off, let me just say CONGRATULATIONS to the Detroit Lions organization as a whole. You’ve far exceeded my expectations for the 2011 season on many levels…That being said, I really don’t like their first round draw of the New Orleans Saints. However I do see a few areas where, if executed correctly, the Lions can pull out the victory.
i.Limit mistakes. Good teams like the Saints capitalize on opposing teams mistakes. This means limiting turnovers, and even more importantly, limiting DUMB penalties. The hostile Superdome crowd is notorious for causing both.
ii.Pressure Brees. I want CONSTANT pressure in Drew Brees’ face all game. I’m not saying put a hit out on him, but the front four need to have their presence felt in the Saints backfield. Brees is not fond of the physicality at ALL. So on all play action, screens, or draw plays…PUT HIM ON HIS BACK!! Rattle his cage, this COULD throw his timing off.
iii.Run the ball. One of the BEST ways to slow down the Saints offense is to keep them off the field. We already know the Lions can count on the passing game, so run on first and second downs. This will give the defense a blow, a could set the pace of the game.

We all know the Lions face a tall task, but execution of these points will be crucial.

A.{LIONS}With the Lions clinching a playoff berth, have they met your season’s expectations? Or do you expect more at this point?

Yes the Lions have not only met my expectations, they have exceeded them. It’s been well documented in the DMR, that I’ve been quite skeptical of the Lions’ success this season. As the preseason DMR Show indicates, I’d only had them penciled in for six or seven victories this year (67:00  http://www.blogtalkradio.com/detroitmansroom/2011/09/05/dmr-show). There were just too many unknowns to start the year. From Matt Stafford’s health, to whether or not Ndomankong Suh would experience a “Sophomore Slump”.  However, I’ll happily be the FIRST to report that those fears have been allayed. As a LONG suffering Lions fan, the chance to compete in the playoffs is a welcomed site. The likes of which we haven’t seen around these parts since the 1999 campaign.

Now that the goal of reaching the playoffs has been reached, it’s hard NOT to want more of this good thing we’ve got going on. True enough, the majority of the Lions’ losses have come at the hands of current NFC Playoff teams. However, when you consider that they were IN a lot of those match ups until the waning moments. Add to that the fact that besides the seeding and corresponding home games, regular season records are irrelevant. Yes, I’ve been very vocal all along. Reminding everyone that the progression of this current Lions rebuild will be a process. That being said, as I glance across the landscape of potential NFC Playoff opponents…Its hard to bridal the feeling of quiet confidence.
