Reasons For Lions Fans To Watch The NFL Scouting Combine

When it comes to acquiring young talent in the NFL draft so many people put so much stock into the first round alone. This weekend is the NFL Scouting Combine where over 300 players will compete for ruffly 220 draft positions. There are only 32 picks in the first round and the Detroit Lions only have one. Outside of the 23rd overall pick the Lions hold picks 54 (Rd2), 86 (Rd3), 117 (Rd4), 150 (Rd5), 213 (Rd7).

Players picked in later rounds give your team depth, future and they are inexpensive.  If you are able to get starters or guys in rotation after the 3rd round, then you have hit the jackpot. Sammie Lee Hill  (4th Rd 2009) and Willie Young (7th Rd 2010) (pictured) both give the front 4 depth, versatility and options. They both can and have start. Young has not hit his ceiling and could be future full time starter. Jason Fox (4th Rd 2010) and Johnny Culbreath (7th Rd 2011) both have question marks, but are players that could be part of the future of the offensive line.

These players are proof that homework must be done to bring new Lions home to the Lions den. This is what the combine does for scouts and should do for football fans. Don’t just wish for player at a certain position at the 23rd pick. Watch the Combine. Learn who some of these players are, because when the Lions are on the clock they will be taking the best player available. You will feel a lot better about the talent selected if you have an idea who they are.
